Window # 36 - Iris 2
2001
glass
6801 Gaylord Parkway - Exterior Texas Sculpture Garden
From the artist:

"The sculpture that was created for the Texas Sculpture Garden is a good example both stylistically and conceptually of a body of work I have been exploring for the last three years. I have been collapsing, altering and softening the structures of windows. This to me seems like a great metaphor for any number of social and self-imposed sculptures. We exist with materials daily for many different reasons, yet the strongest reading is the social and material relationships and values.

This sculpture was created as a self-portrait of my family, yet it is ambiguous enough to take on many different intrpretations. Hope you enjoy it."

David Graeve

David Graeve lives and works in Houston, Texas. He moved to Texas from in 2000 after an illustrious curating career in Minneapolis, MN. He received a B.F.A. in sculpture from the University of Minnesota where he was the co-founder of the Student Art Society.

In Texas less than three years, he has already been in more than a dozen exhibitions. He works with glass, but in a different manner from fellow Texas Sculpture Garden artists Jim Bowman and Polly Gessell. Mr. Graeve's materials are primarily industrial glass blocks and lenses which he alters and manipulates through heat. His piece, Window 36 - Iris 2, is a reference to his family and young daughter Iris.
